Some days you just can’t win.

Police officers in Melbourne, Australia were left red faced Monday after engaging in a standoff with absolutely no one.

The officers attended the residence in Melton South at 9:30 a.m. following a tip-off, a Victoria Police spokesperson told Mashable via email. Apparently, they were responding to “information regarding a person of interest in regard to an ongoing investigation.”

Armed police took “every precaution and attempted to call out to anyone inside the house,” but after hours of waiting for someone, anyone to respond, officers made their way into the home.

Just, there was no-one actually inside.

“After no response from the property the house was entered and cleared about 4.30 p.m. and no occupants were located inside,” the spokesperson said.

It wasn’t a completely fruitless operation, however, as police seized a vehicle and a motorcycle believed to be stolen. “As the investigation is ongoing it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage,” he added.

Better safe than sorry, we guess.
